On March 3rd 2025 Congressman Mike Lawler wrote an opinion piece for the New York Post where he claimed “Forget ‘baloney’ budget claims — I’m voting to break feds’ debt addiction.” The following day he proudly reposted the piece in his own web site. The fact is that Lawler voted for concurrent resolution H.Con.Res.14, which is a 10-year plan that would increase the debt limit to $55.6 trillion in 2034. The debt limit was $35.5 trillion in FY2024. So the plan Lawler voted for would increase the debt by $20.1 trillion, which is an outrageous 56.7%.
Furthermore, this budget would rip health care away from millions by demanding “savings” of $880 billion in health-care expenses while handing out $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations. The budget Lawler voted for effectively includes more than $200 million in cuts to SNAP, formerly known as food stamps. His attack on the nutrition of his youngest constituents is dangerous and simply shameful.
Lawler tells us that somehow these cuts will not affect those among us “deserving” of these benefits, that somehow the savings can be achieved by eliminating waste and fraud. However, the Congressional Budget Office, a non-partisan organization tasked by Republicans with analyzing these budget projections, has confirmed what we already knew, so-called savings of that magnitude won’t be possible without cuts to Medicare, Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
